![]() While we expect most cameras to have a companion smartphone app, DJI makes its Mimo app a strict requirement to activate the Osmo Action 3. If you're after extended record times, consider the Adventure Kit for $439, which includes the camera, three batteries, and a USB-C case that holds and charges three batteries at a time. ![]() You can charge the battery in-camera directly the Osmo has a USB-C charging port. What's better is that it manages to go that long without overheating-during our battery run-down test, the screen turned itself off about 55 minutes and warned that the camera was hot, but continued to roll until the battery exhausted about 20 minutes later. The Osmo Action 3's battery gets about 75 minutes of record time at 4K60, a very good result for an action cam. Voice commands work too, so you can say Start Recording or Stop Recording to control the camera. The interface is pretty intuitive, with visible icons for resolution and frame rate changes, and swipe gestures to change between recording, playback, and menus. The touch screens are used to adjust the rest of the settings. The Osmo only has two buttons-Power/Mode on its side and Record on the top. The camera is also made tough, with a metal frame and Gorilla Glass covers its lens it's rated to withstand drops from a modest 4.9 feet. ![]() If you want to go deeper, a 197-foot accessory case is available for $69. It's a bit better than the GoPro Hero series (33 feet), which might make a difference for recreational divers. The Osmo 3 is waterproof without the need for an external case, and is rated to withstand pressure as deep as 52 feet below the surface. Mounting clips attach directly to the bottom of the camera for quick changes from mount to handheld use The Osmo has connection points on its bottom plate for direct mounting and includes a cage with side attachment points so you can orient the camera vertically for 9:16 recording. You'll have to buy some extra clips, though, as the camera ships with just one. It maintains compatibility with GoPro mounts and while the clip itself requires a thumb screw to secure in place, it's quick to move the camera from one mounting point to another, assuming you have multiple clips of course. The small camera is made for mounting, and while it doesn't include a photo-style tripod socket, I like the detachable mounting clip system. ![]() The Osmo 3 Action measures 1.7 by 2.8 by 1.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.1 ounces. The Action 3 one-ups GoPro again as DJI's camera supports touch input on its front display, a feature GoPro doesn't include, even in its newest camera, the Hero11 Black. DJI introduced the latter on the original Osmo Action, beating GoPro to the punch. Like the GoPro, the camera is an extruded rectangle with a lens, a big rear touch display, and a front-facing color display. It follows the form GoPro established with its long-running Hero series. The DJI Osmo Action 3 is as cookie-cutter as it gets for action cam design. For the price, it's a compelling alternative to the GoPro Hero9 Black (now on sale for around $550), especially if you care more about high frame rates than pixel count. The Osmo 3 looks a bit more familiar-the camera is basically a GoPro Hero clone, with a few interesting differences, including a front touch screen and a quick-detach mounting system. The new camera returns to the form factor of the original edition, an indication that the experimental magnetic, modular Action 2 wasn't as much of a hit as DJI hoped. DJI is back with its third-generation Osmo 3 action cam (A$519).
